Dear Harbor of Hope friends,

Nine years ago last month, Lynda and I pulled into the driveway of our new home on Elmont Road in Lowell. We left a growing student ministry in the Midwest to join a team of people planting a new church in New England. Later that year, we opened the doors for our first services as Harbor of Hope Christian Church.

Over the past nine years, I have seen Harbor grow from a core group of about 25 to a congregation of nearly 250 people. We have changed facilities a few times (some of you have been with us at all 3 locations!). Lives have been changed because of the gospel message shared by Harbor of Hope. Many of you have committed or recommitted your lives to Jesus through the ministry of Harbor of Hope. Many more have been touched and impacted by the ministry and service in our community. I am so proud of what God has done here…and thankful to be a part of this amazing church.

Because of this, it is with a sad heart that I share this news with you. I have accepted a ministry position with the Rochester Christian Church in Rochester, Illinois. RCC is my ‘home’ church where I grew up. In fact, my family is still in the same community. RCC has invited me to join their staff as “Senior Associate Minister.” While this was a painful and difficult decision to make for me and Lynda, we believe it is God’s plan for our lives and for our family, and we are following his lead.

As a result, I am resigning as the Pastor of Harbor of Hope Christian Church. My last ‘official’ day as a staff member is June 22nd. I have a deep love for all of you and for this church, and it will be difficult for us to leave. However, we know God has amazing things in store for Harbor of Hope.

As I shared this news with our Management Team, our first choice of a new Lead Pastor was Jed Mullenix. Since joining our staff two years ago, Jed has displayed a strong ability to lead. He has great vision for what God can do in this church and in this community. And he is a gifted communicator of God’s truth. We are confident Jed is the person for the job.

I’m excited to announce that Jed has accepted the opportunity. I believe Jed is following God’s plan for his life and that God will grow him greatly as he leads. I believe God will grow Harbor as well. Jed has great ideas and vision for what Harbor can become in this community and in this region. He will greatly benefit from your support, encouragement and prayers as he leads and ministers alongside you.

We will share more about this on Sunday during our services. We are also celebrating the baptisms of several individuals in our services that day. You might say it’s a day of new beginnings.

If you have any questions, we’ll be happy to address them. Thank you for allowing me to serve at Harbor with you. This church will always hold a special place in my heart.

With love, your pastor,
Matt Bortmess
